Well here we are…my first recipe for a dog treat. Are you wondering why? Well, my daughter just recently rescued a very cute (sorry, handsome) and very, very sweet Greyhound named Buddy. So since is Buddyβs first Thanksgiving with us, I thought it only fitting that he had his own Thanksgiving treat, so here it is, drum-roll please… π₯π₯π₯ Thanksgiving Dog Biscuits!! Woof!! πΆ
These Thanksgiving Dog Biscuits are healthy and have all the yummy Thanksgiving Day dinner ingredients:
turkey
sweet potato
cranberry
carrots
oats and rice flour
How to make Thanksgiving Dog Biscuits
One great thing about these are that they are really easy to make. I had a lot of fun making them to be honest. First thing you need to do, get all of your ingredients together…
All you need to do is brown the ground turkey and the sweet potato and carrots can easily be cooked in the microwave. The remaining ingredients are pantry items. Sounds super simple right? That’s because it is! π
Once you have all of your ingredients together just mix it all up in a bowl, form it into a ball and place on a rice flour dusted surface and roll out like so…
Then using your favorite cookie cutter (really any shape will work) cut out the dog biscuits and place them on a parchment lined cookie sheet. Bake for about 25 minutes or until the edges start to become a light golden brown. Cool on wire racks. The amount of biscuits you will get will depend on the size of your cookie cutter; I used a medium-sized bone shape and got around 25 biscuits. Just remember to let them cool completely before you give them to Fido…π
You will need to store these in the refrigerator. Once they are completely cooled, place in an airtight container and keep in the fridge for up to a week. You can also freeze them and just take out a few at a time; defrost in the fridge.
Mine did not make it right to the fridge, Buddy could not wait that long!! π
Buddy the Greyhound
This is Buddy’s first Thanksgiving with our family. My daughter just recently moved out into her own apartment π’ and also just rescued this sweet little Greyhound dog named Buddy. That was already his name, she did not get to pick it. She also did not pick Buddy, Buddy picked her. That’s how they do the adoptions, they let the dog pick their new owner. Pretty incredible huh? I have to say, the process seems to work great and I am happy to say that both Buddy and his mom could not be happier.
Buddy was a racing Greyhound. π Buddy ran his last race over the summer. πππ He is done with cages, over-training, racing and cruel conditions. Now he has more toys than a human toddler and a wardrobe to match! When she got him he was a little timid and didn’t even know how to “sit”. He is the most lovey-dovey, sweetest dog ever and now will definitely sit for a treat! I personally had no prior experience with Greyhounds, and I also had no idea how unbelievably sweet they are, I mean REALLY, REALLY sweet.
One amazing thing to note, if you have not already heard, Greyhound racing in Florida (home to 2/3’s of the country’s racetracks) will be banned as of the year 2020. YAY!!! BUT, this means a LOT of these gentle giants will be in need of loving homes. Just something to think about. β€π The Greyhound owners community is truly amazing, they have been so helpful to my daughter with everything and anything you can imagine when adopting a new pet.
Here is a recent article in People Magazine if you are interested in learning more: Greyhound Racing Ban in Florida.
I will leave you with this, a picture of my amazing daughter and the love of her life…Welcome to the family Buddy! β€
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
