Regrow Your Green Onions

Regrowing your green onions is easy and fun!

Did you know that you can regrow your store bought green onions again, and again, and again…wait whaaaaaaattttt??? 🤯 Yep! I know… I had no idea this was possible either. I’ve really been trying to do my part to not waste any food and buy only what I absolutely need. Sure, some waste will be inevitable since grocery store produce sadly does not always last as long as it should. I do use green onions quite a bit to finish a dish to give it a spicy, onion-y pop of flavor. But since I only use a little bit at a time, the rest usually winds up spoiling over the course of a week or so. So into the garbage went the rest…but not anymore!

This is so super simple too. All you need is:

  • A small-medium glass vase or glass
  • scissors
  • and green onions of course

How to Regrow Green Onions

To begin with, take your onions one at a time and cut them above the white section right where they split… save the tops in a plastic bag in your refrigerator to use later.

After that, put the green onions in your vase or glass, fill with about one or two inches of water. Place in a window and wait a few days. That’s it!

After three days…

You will start seeing some growth. They really grow back pretty quickly as you will see.

Pretty cool huh?

Maintaining your green onions

Make sure you keep trimming them. Store what you cut in the fridge until needed. Also, dump the water and refill the vase each time you cut the onions. If you notice the outer white skins getting a little slimy just gently peel them away and replace in the vase.

Such a simple way to always have green onions on hand with out having to buy them all the time. Hope you enjoy this little tip. Keep on cooking and creating in the kitchen.
